Shortly before 11 p.m. we got word of a double stabbing in Peekskill, but police would not provide night cops reporter Reka Bala with any information. Unfortunately, we were up against our deadline for Putnam and northern Westchester, so it became apparent that we’d miss the print deadline when Reka headed to the crime scene. On the plus side, we have LoHud.com, where there is no deadline, obviously. I posted the initial snippets of information and urged viewers to check in later for updates once they became available. Indeed, shortly after midnight, Reka called in details that she got from a Peekskill detective sergeant. We found out that two males were taken to Westchester Medical Center with stab wounds and that police were pursuing several leads. Police told us that the victims may have known their attackers. A more complete story was then posted on LoHud.com, with a note asking viewers to check in later in the morning when the day crew would take over the reporting. This is a good example of how we handle late-breaking news even when our Journal News deadlines have passed. Thanks for reading!
