Bill Hughes joined the Journal News as a staff writer in January 2001 covering city hall in Yonkers and has spent the past two years covering crime and public safety issues. A born and bred Brooklynite, Bill spent 12 years after high school working in various construction trades while obtaining a bachelor's degree in journalism and philosophy. After another three years working full-time and getting a master's degree on the side, he left a lucrative profession as a general contractor to become a reporter, telling friends and relatives, "It's a calling, not a career move."

Cybercrime outpacing physical crime?

Overall losses due to cyber-crime now exceed the costs of physical crime by some estimates, according to a report released today by the American Bar Association examining trends in criminal justice issues. The dirty secret of the disbarred

Every once in a while on the crime beat you stumble across something that amounts to a dirty little secret in the world of crime and punishment. That happened to me yesterday when I learned that disbarred lawyers are routinely employed by their non-disbarred colleagues and can perform certain tasks, including real estate closings.
