State Police Investigator Brian Tumulty in Haverstraw received a superintendent’s award today for his role in capturing the man who murdered Karesse Ebron, 16, of Spring Valley in June 2006.
Tumulty, with the assistance of Spring Valley police, gave a polygraph examination to Ryan R. Ross, 23, of Spring Valley at the state police barracks in Haverstraw. He was a friend of Ebron who lived in the same Spring Valley housing complex as she did.
The polygrapgh results indicated Ross’s responses were deceptive.
After an extensive follow up interview with Tumulty, Ross admitted he had planned and executed the murder of Ebron. Ross gave a written detailed statement of the murder and the location of her body. Ross later gave a video-taped confession and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in County Court.
Ross was sentenced in March to 22 years to life in state prison for beating Ebron to death with a baseball bat and burying her body under leaves off Route 45 across from the Eugene Levy Park in Ramapo.
Tumulty was honored with more than 50 honorees for bravery, investigative persistence, police education, traffic safety and community service at the New York State Police Annual Awards Day Ceremony in Albany. The ceremony followed the State Police’s Annual Memorial Day Service to honor the memory and service of deceased members of the State Police.
