Wednesday night: Gangs and Security

The Rockland public can learn about streets gangs and anti-terrorism preparedness and other security issues across the county during two seminars on Wednesday night, May 2.

The first one focuses on street gangs – criminal groups who recruit young people and use violence. Rain Storms and Rockland violence

Today, April 16, 2007, was a lot like Sept. 15, 1999, when a storm and violence came together.

While much of the county was under water today due to the Nor’easter pounding the area with rain since Saturday night, Haverstraw town police arrested Andrew Jennings for murder. He is accused of stabbing a man multiple times in the chest in an Haverstraw village apartment on Route 9W after an aborted drug deal.

Kralik and O’Neill debating tomorrow

In their first political debate of the 2007 election season, Rockland Sheriff James Kralik and Clarkstown Detective Sgt. Tim O’Neill, a Stony Point councilman, will discuss issues face to face today from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Palisades Room in Casey Hall at Dominican College in Orangeburg.
Kralik is the Republican candidate, while O’Neill is running as a Democrat. The election is in November.
The college’s Student Government Association is sponsoring the leadership symposium.

Tribute to Rockland’s 9-11 fallen

A day for mourning

I have worked on two sad news stories in the past week. There was the plane crash last Wednesday that killed the pilot Gregory Doppke and his two passengers, Richard Lomas and Andrew Young, who were flying from White Plains to play golf in North Carolina. Then there was the death Sunday of Stuart Cohen, a beloved narcotics investigator who developed a mystery illness after raiding a heroin stash house.

RoccerMom hit RocBottom

Anyone who has kept tabs on Lower Hudson Valley events in recent months has likely heard of “RoccerMom,” the Yorktown mother who was just jailed for the drunken-driving crash last year that killed her daughter’s 16-year-old friend.
