Brinks college scholarships available

March

Nearly 26 years after their murders on Oct. 20, 1981, the memories of Nyack Sgt. Edward O’Grady and Officer Waverly “Chipper” Brown are kept alive for the future through a scholarship fund for college-bound students aspiring for law enforcement careers.

The O’Grady-Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1990. Each year, scholarship grants are awarded to high school seniors. The money – ranging from $800 to $1,000 – depends on the number of college-bound students chosen. Last year, eight students received portions of $6,000.

For this year, applications are available at local public and private high school guidance counselor officers or at “O’Grady-Brown”:http://www.ogradybrown.com/ The deadline for submission is April 15. The annual scholarship brunch is 10 a.m. June 2 at the Nyack Seaport.

O’Grady and Brown were killed at a New York State Thruway roadblock less than after a Brinks armored car was robbed and security guard Peter Paige was killed at the Nanuet Mall. A memorial honoring the men sits at the Mountainview Avenue entrance to the Thruway off of Route 59 in Nyack.

For more information, write to the O’Grady-Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., P.O. Box 1024 Nyack, N.Y. 10960, visit “O’Grady-Brown”:http://www.ogradybrown.com/ or call the South Nyack-Grand View Police Department at 845-358-0206, extension 16
