Covering a crime on deadline

Shortly before 11 p.m. we got word of a double stabbing in Peekskill, but police would not provide night cops reporter Reka Bala with any information. Unfortunately, we were up against our deadline for Putnam and northern Westchester, so it became apparent that we’d miss the print deadline when Reka headed to the crime scene. On the plus side, we have LoHud.com, where there is no deadline, obviously. I posted the initial snippets of information and urged viewers to check in later for updates once they became available. Indeed, shortly after midnight, Reka called in details that she got from a Peekskill detective sergeant. We found out that two males were taken to Westchester Medical Center with stab wounds and that police were pursuing several leads. Police told us that the victims may have known their attackers. A more complete story was then posted on LoHud.com, with a note asking viewers to check in later in the morning when the day crew would take over the reporting. This is a good example of how we handle late-breaking news even when our Journal News deadlines have passed. Thanks for reading!

I have a question: a week ago there was a riot at palisades mall. after Alpha dog to rival gangs. Did the journal news cover that? I was speaking with a friend and found this out also heard how it wasnt publicized. now why would that happen?
According to Clarkstown Police Department Sgt. Harry Baumann, there was no “riot” or even a large or small fight at the Palisades Center during the time frame offered above. I spoke to Baumann today.
From reading your post, you seem to have heard about this supposed gang fight from a friend. Was that friend a witness? Do you have a specific date, time and place at the mall? You can email me at slieberm@lohud.com.
Clarkstown police did have added patrols at the mall because a movie involving gangs was playing, Baumann said.
Clarkstown police usually provide us with information on major incidents, but sometimes that doesn’t happen. And someimes, what one person thinks is a “riot” or big fight is considered nothing more than pushing and shoving by anoher person or the police.
Update:
Clarkstown Sgt. Harry Baumann called back at 2:15 p.m. He said there might have been a fight at the Palisades Center two weeks ago. Baumann said the police response was logged in the computer as a “suspicious incident” and he was researching the details. Clarkstown police had extra officers at the mall that night because the theater was showing the dance movie, “Stomp the Yard.”
I will upadate again when I learn more.
yes it had to do with that. or alhpa dog. I tend to believe this person. Thanx
I spoke to Clarkstown Sgt. Harry Baumann this morning. He said he had spoken to one of the officers who had been assigned to the Palisades Center on the night of Jan. 12. Baumann said the officer told him there was no riot that night or any fight. It seems the night was getting late and mall security guards started asking a large group of people on the fourth floor near the theaters to start leaving. Some people started running down the corridor. The police had extra patrols because the movie “Stomp the Yard” was playing.
